3 Ski touring tips around Mayrhofen-Hippach

Ski touring is addictive; not only because of the enchanting ascents through fairytale forests covered in fresh, untouched snow but also because of the explosion of joy at descending through light, fluffy powder snow. There are so many amazing ski tours around Mayrhofen-Hippach, for beginners to experienced tourers. I put together the details of these three, easy routes to give a friend who wanted to try snow touring for the first time an insight into this incredible, meditative sport.

Ski Tour MAYRHOFEN – WIESENHOF: Also perfect for a night-time tour

  • Ascent: 1 ¼ hours
  • 625 altitude meters
  • Gentle ski tour

Start Point:
Mayrhofen, Dorf Haus 650m

Parking:
There is a small car park next to Wirtshaus zum Griena (no fee)

The route from Mayrhofen to the Wiesenhof is perfect for finding your feet and learning how to climb a mountain wearing skis. The tour starts directly from the car park. Route nuber 41, affectionatley nicknamed the „Alter Stillupperweg“ by locals, leads through a beautiful pine forest past the stations of the cross. At the final station is a huge cross on a stone wall. At this point the route flattens out for a few metres giving you the chance to catch your breath at the halfway point. The ‘alte Stillupperweg‘ ends at a road which leads into the Stillup valley. Here, you cross the road and take the forest path to the left. The next section is one of the steepest (if only for a few metres) but the reward is an amazing view over Mayrhofen. Continue past three huts which are only occupied in summer. The final few metres of ascent are along the tobogganing trail.

Warning: at this point you might come across taxis bringing tobogganers to the Wiesenhof. When you arrive, refresh yourself in the cosy restaurant with a schnapps and a ʻRadler‘(shandy) -from the local ʻZillertal Bierʼ brewery of course- to celebrate your first ski tour.

INSIDERTIP:
An evening tour promises a perfect, freshly-groomed piste. The secret is not necessarily to be the first on the mountain in the morning but the last at night!

Ski Tour ASTEGG – PENKEN: With the option of skiing after the tour

  • Ascent: 2 hours
  • 720 altitude metres
  • Gentle ski tour

Start Point:
Finkenberg, Astegg, Gasthof Astegg 1170m

Parking:
There is a small car park for about 10 cars approximately 100m after Gasthof Astegg. A little further is a turing point where you can also park (no fee)

Route Description: Winterimpressionen 2013 (Archiv TVB Mayrhofen_Foto Stefanie) Eder) (51)

On leaving the car park which lies at 1170m, the route at first follows a forest track in the direction of the trees. After about 1km you come across the forest path which serves as a ski tour route in winter. You can’t miss it as it is a popular training route and always has tracks on it. During the ascent you can enjoy views onto the village of Finkenberg and one of Mayrhofen’s four local mountains, the Grünberg. After a good hour you arrive at the Penken Express 6 person chairlift. Cross the piste and hike the final 500m to reach the Gschößwandhaus restaurant. The restaurant has a delicious menu featuring local speciality dishes and superb views over Mayrhofen from its large, sunny terrace. Descend via the foresters track from Penken to Astegg.

INSIDERTIP:
If you’d like to enjoy some alpine skiing after this tour, buy a ski pass from the top station of the Penken and spend the rest of your day cruising the 125km of pistes in the ski area.

Ski Tour RASTKOGELHÜTTE – A secret tip for full moon nights

  • Ascent: 2 hours
  • 424 altitude metres
  • Gentle ski tour

Start Point:
Hippach, Hochschwendberg, Sportalm 1700m

Parking:
There is a car park next to the Sportalm where you can park for the whld day for a fee of €3.00. Please note the road is not cleared beyond Gasthof Roswitha and snow chains are needed during or after a snowfall.

Route Description:Skitouring

Leave the car park next to the Sportalm and turn just before the toll house which lies above the Alm. From this point the route is already visible – up the steep hillside. Now is the time to decide if you are ready for your next challenge or not! When you arrive at the Alm the route continues to climb gently to the signpost for the Rastkogelhütte. A last steeper climb and you come to the beautiful path to the Rastkogelhütte. There are views onto the Roßkopf in front of you and, left of it, the Rastkogel – two popular destinations for experienced ski tourers. Sitting on the hut’s terrace, you will enjoy a breathtaking mountain panorama of the Zillertal Alps from the Reichenspitze, to the Ahornspitze and even the Zigmondyspitze.
The descent is via the tobogganing trail, which is also largely the same route you ascended. Be aware of tobogganers on the path.

INSIDERTIP: This tour is especially spectacular on a full moon night.
