Mayrhofen is not all about alpine skiing
Winter sport equals downhill skiing, right? But that’s not quite true. Mayrhofen in the Ziller Valley offers sports fanatics much more than just perfectly prepared pistes. Cross-country skiing, ski touring and mountain running; extreme sportsman Markus Kröll gives us an insight into his diverse winter training programme in the beautiful Ziller Valley.
Cross-country versus Alpine Skiing
ʺThe best training grounds are just on my doorstep. In Mayrhofenʺ, reveals Markus Kröll. Since decades he has belonged to the top ten international mountain sportsmen and loves his sports. ʺIn the cold months I mostly train at a lower cardio rate. Sports such as cross-country skiing, jogging or ski touring are the perfect complimentary disciplines to keep me in condition over winter.ʺ, explains Markus whose motto is, ʺnever give up!ʺ
Allianz Cross-Country Ski Trail
For Markus the strenuous sports season ends in October. He dedicates his two week training break to his second passion: restoration. But in November he gets his cross-country kit ready ʺthat’s the best way for me to train my endurance at the right cardio level.ʺ, he says, explaining the benefits of the sport.
The well-lit, two kilometre long Allianz cross-country trail is his home training ground. His favourite place in the Ziller Valley is on the Grünberg mountain. With his touring skis on the sportsman can reach the peak in under 2 hours.
Lace up those Running Shoes
ʺI love it when the snow crunches under my running shoesʺ, says Markus Kröll, who jogs his circuits even in mid-winter. And why not? The large choice of prepared winter walking routes in Mayrhofen offer kilometres of jogging opportunities. Markus enjoys jogging the route along the lit Ziller promenade just as much as a mountain run. ʺFor me jogging is all about being surrounded by nature as well as conquering the altitude metres. My reward is the amazing view from the top of the mountain.ʺ, enthuses Markus about the Ziller Valley. ʺIf I could choose any training ground in the whole world, I would choose Mayrhofen every time.ʺ he says with conviction.
