Cross country skiing – what could be better? Woohoo!

The winter offers just about every type of sport imaginable in the snow and ice. In addition to the main sports of skiing and snowboarding, there are so many other possibilities. In the resort of Mayrhofen-Hippach you can try them all – from ice-skating to tobogganing, ski touring to ice climbing or snow shoe hiking to cross-country skiing. And, that’s exactly what I want to write about today.

Marathon or leisure

cross country skiing

Marathon trail of more than 4 kilometres

Burgschrofen marathon circuit:
The circuit starts on a gentle downhill trail towards Mühlbach. This is followed by a steeper uphill section, approximately 200m, which leads to another nice downhill run. The trail starts back towards Mayrhofen on a gentle uphill gradient. After about 3.3km you’ll reach the (optional) “ski-cross” section. If you still have energy to spare, make sure to ski the “Kamelbuckel” (“camel hump”) section. A lovely circuit, especially recommended for those skiers who enjoy longer training sessions.
Distance: 4,230 metres
Duration: approx. 40 minutes
Difficulty: medium
Style: classic & skating
Altitude difference: 60 metres

A more leisurely option!

Burgschrofen leisure circuit:
This circuit follows a classic route, firstly descending gently towards the mouth of the valley, then returning towards Mayrhofen on a gentle uphill gradient.
Distance: 1,400 metres
Duration: approx. 25 minutes
Difficulty: easy
Style: classic & skating
Altitude difference: 20 metres

Pro or sprint

Burgschrofen Pro Circuit:
From the start, this track descends gradually towards the mouth of the valley to the “ski-cross” section, which should be skied like a ski racer. The gates force you to change direction quickly, improving your technique of asymmetrical leading hands as well as your coordination. The trail then ascends gently back towards Mayrhofen to the “camel hump” section which will give your arm, back, stomach, bum and leg muscles a good workout. Finally, the steep descent at the end of the circuit will test your balance.
Distance: 1,600 metres
Duration: approx. 25 minutes
Difficulty: easy
Style: classic & skating
Altitude difference: 20 metres

Burgschrofen Sprint Circuit:
Hansjörg Aschenwald, our Olympic bronze medalist in Nordic combined (ski jumping and cross-country skiing), has a suggestion for the ultimate training programme on this trail:

  • 15 to 20 minutes warm up skiing
  • Ski the marked section (200m) as fast as possible, then ski the remaining 700m at a gentle pace.
  • Complete a total of 10 circuits
  • 15 to 20 minutes of cool down skiing
  • Duration of training session: approx. 1 hour 15 minutes

Length: 900 Meter
Duration: approx. 1 Minute
Difficulty: easy
Style: classic & skating
Altitude difference: 10 metres
